Postoperative care & healthy living

Ways to a healthy heart from Dr. Joseph McGinn

As a cardiologist, it’s my job help people live longer, healthier lives. Proper diet, exercise and not smoking are certainly three important keys to living longer. But what else factors in to a long life span? I believe, as many studies have shown, that people who are intrinsically happy with themselves and life in general, live longer, healthier lives. Think about it — the happier you are, the less stress you feel, the less wear on your heart.

Here are four important steps you can take to a happier, healthier you.

Try something new. Or old.

Staying active, having a purpose and doing what you love is a key to being your happiest and healthiest. Learn a new language. Ride that bike that’s been sitting in the garage. Spend time with your grandkids. Garden. You, and only you, knows what truly makes you happy. So do what you love and do it frequently.

Think positive.

Focus on the good and the good with focus on you. In today’s day and age, it’s easier said than done. But those who are the most optimistic are inherently happier with themselves and those around them.

Be intimate.

This doesn’t mean that you have to be sexually active — although that has its benefits, too — but the emotional rewards of expressing love and feeling loved is not only good for the heart but the soul.

Laugh.

Laughing not only makes you feel good, but can boost the moods of those around you. Surround yourself with people who enjoy a bit of levity and you’ll all reap the benefits of a good laugh.
